Gold Coast First Impressions

After a rainy weekend in Brisbane, we are ready for some sun! The forecast for the week looks better and we’ve seen enough of the city, so we spontaneously added a week in Gold Coast, about an hour south of Brisbane by train. (By the way, buy a Go Pass in Brisbane for the buses and trains, you save about 30% per fare, which has saved us $50 in 4 days.)

After an uneventful train and bus ride spent browsing Gold Coast tourist magazines, we arrived at our hotel, Hi Ho Beach Apartments on Broadbeach. We were greeted by Natalia, who has managed the complex with her husband Tim for 12 years. She was very friendly and helpfully oriented us with some maps and brochures for the area.

Broadbeach is directly south of Surfers Paradise, and is an up-and-coming area.  It has less of the backpacker party atmosphere, and more of a laid back, community feel.

Our room is fantastic. After last night at the crappy hostel, this place is paradise. Its a one bedroom apartment with a kitchen, living room, laundry, and a balcony with a view of the beach. We headed to the grocery store soon after we settled in, and soon felt right at home when Dan made tacos for dinner with plenty of leftovers.

We ended our first day here with a dip in the hot tub and relaxing the couch!
