Best Places to Spend Christmas in the Sunshine
If you’re sick of the cold grey English weather this Christmas and are after a bit of winter sun, then here are the top places to spend the festive season in the sunshine. From the traditional places such as Australia and Florida, to the beautiful South Africa and the exotic shores of Antigua and Thailand, there are plenty of destinations to choose from.
Australia
Australia is of course an obvious choice for spending Christmas in the sunshine. Located in the southern hemisphere, it’s summer time in Australia during the winter months here. You’ll enjoy scorching temperatures – perfect for lazy days on the beach. Expect barbecues and lots of fresh seafood for Christmas dinner, whilst relaxing by the pool. Don’t worry though they’ll still be plenty of festive cheer with Christmas, trees, fake snowflakes, reindeer and seasonal carols.
Antigua
If you’re after a real tropical Christmas, complete with white sand beaches, palm trees and coconuts, then the Caribbean island of Antigua could be just the place. Of course with the island’s British heritage, you can still enjoy traditional Christmas customs such as carols, trees and decorations, but a Caribbean twist, as well as some uniquely Antiguan Christmas traditions that originated in West Africa. Many of the island’s luxury Caribbean resorts also celebrate Christmas with Santa Claus, presents and turkey with all the trimmings.
Thailand
Winter is a great time to visit Thailand, meaning plenty of time can be spent on the beach or by the pool, as well as exploring ancient temples, trying delicious cuisine and discovering stunning landscapes. Thailand is mainly a Buddhist country, so not everyone celebrates Christmas here. It’s a great place if you want to get away from the holiday season, however if you’re missing the Christmas spirit, head to the shopping malls or large resorts, where you can be guaranteed Christmas decorations and festive treats.
South Africa
If you want a very traditional British style Christmas, but in the sun, then South Africa is your place. Expect carol services, mince pies, Christmas puddings and crackers! Spend Christmas Day on the beautiful beaches of Cape Town, in the stunning Cape Winelands or even on safari, for a Christmas with a difference. Imagine waking up on Christmas morning hearing a lion roaring in the distance and a game drive following Christmas dinner viewing elephants at the waterhole.
Florida, USA
The USA celebrates Christmas like no where else, with over-the-top decorations and festive food galore. You don’t have to spend it in the cold though as plenty of places in the USA are still sunny and warm. Florida is a great place to go, with plenty of sunshine and where everyone’s driveway is decorated with blow-up Santa Clauses, reindeer and giant candy canes. OK so you may still need to wear a jumper on some of the days, but it’ll still be sunny and there will be plenty of chances to enjoy Florida’s wildlife, theme parks and beautiful beaches.
