4 Unexpected Beach Destinations in Scotland
If you plan on making a trip to the UK this year, a visit to the Scottish isles is a must. The country has some of the best beaches in the UK, which are visited by tourists from all over the world. There are some beaches which are so secluded, that even locals are unaware of their existence! What’s great about this, is that you’ll most likely have the place all to yourself – apart from the odd seagull, of course.
If you happen to be visiting Scotland this year during your British vacation, here are some of the most picturesque beaches you may never have expected to find:
1. Sands of Morar
If you’re a movie buff, you’ll be in your element at Sands of Morar in the West Highlands. This beach was featured in the iconic ‘Local Hero’ movie starring the one and only Burt Lancaster, and it is not hard to see why this particular beach was chosen.
Consisting of over a mile of white sand with pepper-toned jagged cliffs, it’s the ideal beach to visit if you simply wish to get away from it all and endure a relaxing hike to see Scotland in its true natural state.
2. Redpoint Beach
The aptly-named Redpoint Beach in Gairloch is made up of stunning red sands and found on the North East of the country. This resort is perhaps only well-known due to its very own movie appearance in ‘What We Did on Our Holiday’ starring David Tenant, Rosamunde Pike, and Billy Connolly.
What’s great about visiting this beach, is that it’s in close proximity to the nearby town of Gairloch, which is home to an array of outdoor pursuits you may wish to try if you’re daring enough. 3. Sandwood Bay
If you’re truly looking for a best-kept secret when it comes to beaches, you won’t find anywhere more remote than Sandwood Bay in the North Highlands. In fact, many locals don’t even know that the beach exists, which makes it the perfect place to explore at your own leisure, without bumping in to even one tourist on some occasions.
It’s worth bearing in mind that there is no car park; nor are there any public transport routes to take you there, so you’ll need to be fairly fit to give this beach a visit. It must be said that although you’ll be making your way here by foot, it will be well worth the effort once you experience the total peace and quiet.
4. Traigh Mhor
Do you always wish to make an entrance wherever you go? You’ll be blown away by the method of transport you’ll be expected to take to get to this beach. Forget cars or buses – why not have a go at flying to Barra and landing on Traigh Mhor beach itself? Propeller planes frequently land on the white sands of this beach, which has been considered as one of the best-kept in the whole of Scotland. Upon your arrival, you can pay a visit to the airport terminal and visit a café which sells muscles pulled out from the very sea in front of you, and there’s even the opportunity for you to have a go at this yourself!
