The Mediterranean isn’t just a fantastic holiday destination for its amazing climate and fantastic destinations. Personally, it’s the history in this relatively small region that makes it such an iconic and essential place to visit. From Italy to Greece, Turkey down to Cyprus, a trip here can seem expensive. Thankfully, this is prime cruising territory and if you can book one of the cheap cruises available to the Mediterranean, you can enjoy the trip of a lifetime back to the world of the ancients.

Start your trip in northern Italy and make your way down along the western coast for a history lesson that will take you through the ages. Starting at Genoa, you will feel as though you truly have stepped back in time, with much of its medieval architecture still standing especially around the port. It is certainly a place that invites you to explore the labyrinths of the streets and alleyways. Sailing out from Genoa, marvel at the beautiful Italian scenery from the comfort and luxury of your liner as it makes it’s way south down the coast to Rome. Arguably, one of the most iconic cities in the entire world, this amazing place has history oozing from its walls and streets and truly has earned the right to be called the Eternal City. Step into Ancient Rome by visiting the Coliseum, Hadrian’s Mausoleum and the famous Pantheon. For its religious heritage, head into the Vatican City to St Peter’s Basilica and of course take a tour around the museum, taking in the breathtaking Sistine Chapel. Alternatively, simply enjoy the beauty of the architecture and Rome’s surroundings by visiting the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Navona.

From Italy, make your way across the Mediterranean to Greece and enter another ancient world. Athens is a ‘must see’ place for anyone with any interest in culture to visit, with the city filled with antiquities and historic sites. Most notable has to be the breathtaking Acropolis, which seems to dominate the skyline from wherever you stand in Athens. As you move along the coastline, see the renowned Greek Islands and marvel at their beauty. Travel across the Aegean Sea following in the footsteps of those Trojan warriors heading off to fight at Troy on the western coast of Turkey. From Izmir down to Marmaris, you’ll be able to enjoy the spectacular scenery and a whole host of ancient sites whilst basking in the Mediterranean sunshine.

Your final leg is to take in the island of Cyprus, a place dominated by the impressive Troodos Mountains in the centre of the island itself. They are a fantastic place to hike and walk through, taking in the beauty of Cyprus’ natural world. For your historical fix, head for the ancient cities of Kourion and Amathus which have fine architectural works to explore. Alternatively, simply enjoy the port city of Limassol, located on the southern coast of the island, complete with many beaches to settle back and relax on.
