People go off by themselves for many different reasons including gap years, career breaks, to recover after hearing bad news, extended business trips and exploring particular interests you have that others may not enjoy. No longer is travelling alone seen as depressing, strange or unfortunate. Many of us are actively choosing to head off on solo adventures, leaving family and friends behind and giving ourselves permission to finally figure out what we want in life. You’ll experience all the positives of seeing somewhere new without any of the negatives such as missing out on an activity because of ‘fairness’  having to visit a stuffy museum when you’d rather head to a wildlife sanctuary and avoiding food trucks because ‘not everyone likes noodles.’

Have An Amazing Adventure Of Self-Discovery

Travelling solo will absolutely test you. It’ll force you to deal with vague directions, confusing public transport, and arranging your own itineraries, such as booking flights, hotels and day trips. More than that, it requires you to go up to people and just start chatting. There’s no one else to help you, hold your bags or even to talk to if you get bored but it’ll also show you just what you’re made of. Jetting off alone will certainly get you out of your comfort zone, you’ll be meeting the rest of your tour group, eating exotic dishes and visiting places you’d never think you would. It’ll tell you it’s ok not to be around someone else every single minute of the day. That you can eat what you like without having to consider anyone’s taste buds and that incredible experiences can bring strangers closer together quicker than people you’ve known for years, and years.

Take Advantage Of Single Person Discounts

If you aren’t quite ready to be completely by yourself don’t panic! Many tour companies offer guests the option of sharing with a roommate, or up to four people in the accommodation provided. This way you won’t feel lonely or disconnected from co-living, but it’ll be easy for you to find some peace and quiet. You’ll also be able to save some cash with your single person discount, this means money off on flights, accommodation costs and even day trips and excursions. To make sure you aren’t ripped off by a company charging you for a two person room or trip when it’s just you, look for travel websites that have lots of adverts for ‘no single supplements’ or those that specialise in single person trips. Just because you’re alone doesn’t mean you should have to pay extra simply because, up till now, the travel industry has assumed you’ll be going with at least one other person.

Do What You Want When You Like

Does your family hate lazing around while you’re more of a beach bunny? Love birdwatching holidays but your partner can’t stand the idea of many twitchers waxing lyrical over the plumage of a Giant Ibis? When you’re travelling solo you don’t have to play by anyone else’s rules, unless you’re with a tour group and even then there’s normally plenty of free time built into the schedule. If you don’t want to eat somewhere, that’s fine and if you’d rather visit a local art gallery or cultural centre instead of a noisy water park that’s cool too. When you Holiday Solo the only person you need to please when travelling on by yourself is you! Still, there may be times when you miss family and friends as homesickness is natural, but it can usually be cured by a quick Skype call, Whatsapp chat or email. Remember, would you be able to spend all day hiking in a tropical rain forest? Being pampered at a traditional spa? Or learning to surf if you had to think about other people’s likes and dislikes?

Make Friends From All Over The World

The best thing about booking onto a group tour or solo traveler package holiday has got to be the people you meet! Don’t worry about not fitting in, it’s a giant lucky dip anyway, although tour companies try to make sure there are at least a couple of people with similar values or interests to you but you’ll end up talking to everyone anyway. Hold your head up high, smile and, if you’re feeling confident, crack a joke about ‘fancy seeing you all here’ and get stuck into the day’s activities. Most tour companies and reputable firms specializing in singles holidays, plan plenty of bonding opportunities and even organize party style break the ice games. After all, you’re all there to have fun, explore and share amazing experiences together so just go with the flow you’ll soon forget all about being nervous!
