When you’re planning your next adventure, whether its a small trip or a longer break, with family, friends or solo, why don’t you consider some alternative travel options that could make for the trip of a lifetime. I for one like to see as much of an area as I can when I travel, so return tickets to one point have never really been my thing. I’d much rather book a flight to somewhere, and another flight home form somewhere else, then make up that middle part as I go. Here are some awesome ways you can spice up a trip and see more of the world while you’re at it.

Train

Travel by train is seriously underrated, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Sure, there are some fancier routes and services like the Orient Express or the Rocky Mountaineer, but there are some equally beautiful yet affordable routes such as the Oslo to Bergen railway in Norway or the Road to the Isles in Scotland, UK.

You don’t have to stick to these well known rail journeys, either. Get yourself an Interrail pass and plan a route through Europe, or explore a country where trains are cheap, such as Italy or Thailand. It can be extremely cost effective, kinder to the environment, and you usually get to follow the most scenic route with views to die for.

Road Trip

Campervan getaways are another way to explore vast areas in a cost effective manner, since you’ll be checking of travel and accommodation in one go. There’s something charming about inhabiting a home on wheels and visiting anywhere you like in it, which is why taking up the van life has become a popular movement, especially among younger people who prioritise travel.

Parked in Paradise offer some helpful advice and guides on how to convert your own van or find a rental for your upcoming voyage. Having your own van can be great for heading out on multiple adventures or doing one long trip, but hiring a van at far-flung locations is sometimes a necessity,  or even closer to home for less frequent trips, just don’t make these mistakes.

Hitch Hiking

A lot of people would be put off by the idea of hitchhiking, including those on the receiving end. Asking a stranger to trust you, trusting them in return and asking for something for free when you have nothing to give all seems very daunting, and for the first time, it certainly is. However travel by hitching unlocks a world of experiences you could not encounter any other way.

You’ll meet new people daily, engage with locals, receive invites to events you may never have discovered otherwise, and despite popular belief, the chances you’ll end up in the back of someone’s boots rather than at your desired destination are very slim. Check out some of Ana Bakran’s tips on solo female hitchhiking. By following some basic safety tips you can have an unforgettable journey, spending nothing on travel itself.
