Make the Most of your Time in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations for those who would like to experience a bit of culture while enjoying a relaxing vacation that allows them to leave their worries behind.
If you have never visited Amsterdam before, I guarantee you will have a great time here thanks to a large number of stores, places to eat, bars, and places of historical interest. So let’s take a look at how you can make the most of your time in the city:
The Best Place to Shop
In my honest opinion, one of the best places to shop is the IJ Hallen, which happens to be the biggest flea market in all of Europe. Found in a massive warehouse and located in Amsterdam Noord, you can spend hour after hour browsing stalls that sell everything and anything. Whether you’re looking for a bargain, something unusual to take home, or a delicious bite to eat, IJ Hallen is the place to be.
The Best Place to Eat
One of the very best places to eat in Amsterdam has to be Van Stapele, a place that sells chocolate cookies and nothing else! The cookies baked here are absolutely divine, and have dark chocolate on the outside and melted white chocolate in the middle. Beautiful. One of the even better things about Van Stapele is that more than 40 cookies are baked every ten minutes which means you’re guaranteed to bite into something that’s been freshly made and is still gooey on the inside.
The Best Place to Enjoy Architecture
Between 1910 and the 1930’s some buildings were constructed using what is known as the ‘Amsterdam School Architectural Style’. As you make your way around the city you may spot some art deco and art nouveau buildings that have doors and windows that seem very decorative. One of the most stylish buildings in the city, in my opinion, is the Grand Hotel Amrath, which was built in the early 1900’s.
Why not take a stroll around the city and take in some of the architecture? Bring a camera with you and visit the city at sunset and sunrise so you get some spectacular photographs that are full of great memories.
The Best Time to Visit Amsterdam
If you love nothing more than a festival atmosphere you need to head to Amsterdam on King’s Day, which is known locally as ‘Koningsdag’). On April 26th or 27th, the national holiday is celebrated and it marks King Willem-Alexander’s birthday. Every single person in Amsterdam, or so it seems will dress in orange clothes and celebrate. Expect to hear instruments being played, see masses of stalls selling cakes, and much more. Head to the centre of Amsterdam and enjoy a spot of dancing, a glass or two of beer, and some live music.
Amsterdam is a great city to visit, even though it doesn’t have that big city-feel. Full of bicycles, traditional bars, antique shops and many places to eat, it’s the ideal destination if you want a relaxing vacation so you can leave all of those worries behind.
